The Flying Flotilla
OUR SPECIAL REPORT OF THE SECOND FIGHT
Washington, June 1, 1861 Yesterday morning the Thomas Freeborn, supported by the Anacostia and Resolute, engaged the batteries at the entrance of Aquia Creek. The Freeborn opened fire at a quarter past ten with round shot. The steamer Page, near in shore, fired two, but fell short; she then fired a ten second shell, which burst in the air over the railroad depot. After the proper elevation was obtained, Captain Ward, at the bow gun, poured in shell, which had the effect of driving the soldiers out of the barracks, into which the site had been converted. |
